Africa has long been a rich source of inspiration for Europe and other parts of the world. This is especially true for the visual arts, music and performance. In Africa itself, the artistic genres are intertwined and this also includes jewelry as a work of art on the body.

The jewelry artist Martina Dempf has acquired and collected old and contemporary pieces of jewelry during field research and jewelry workshops in many African countries, the shape and appearance of which are often quite surprising.

For the Jakob Bengel Foundation in Idar-Oberstein, Martina Dempf has put together a selection of jewelry objects that represent the peculiarities of African culture, of "adorning yourself".
These works correspond to Martina Dempf's own creations and works by invited European artists who were inspired by encounters with African culture.
