The artist, Margit Jäschke (b. 1962), lives and works in Halle, Germany. She studied there from 1983 through 1991 at the Burg Giebichenstein, College for Art and Design. Since receiving her degree, she has been honored with well-known prizes and scholarships, and since 1991, she has participated in one-man and group exhibitions in both Germany and foreign countries.
Margit Jäschke does not view herself primarily as a goldsmith, rather as an artist to whom the collage, the object, or the drawing are as close to her heart as is decorative art. In jewelry, for her there are clear premises of wearability, while otherwise, she likes to liberally interpret the boundaries between the individual categories. The artist loves playing with the most varied of materials, and to estrange them by putting them into a new context. In her jewelry as well as in the collages or sketches, subtle colorations dominate that are only occasionally interrupted by consciously chosen accents.
In her work, Margit Jäschke tells us short stories or points out apparent trivialities that gain an entirely new importance through the power of her artistry. She knows how to skillfully create new forms over and over which permit associations to actual, familiar objects but which are simultaneously enlivened by the alienation.
In the exhibition, jewelry enters into a dialog with the pictorial works, which is especially apparent when the miniature dimension and the wearability are to be ignored.
